![]() ![]() Now the hole where the top bolt (of three) goes into the trans (C4) is stripped. Had another airport friend give me a ride back to reinstall. Took the starter out and got a lift home to fetch my "PEP BOYS" file folder (not really but I should make one) and get the receipt once again. I had my trusty volt/ohm meter with me to double check things and a retired TRW electrical engineer and retired FORD mechanic (who owns two Mustangs) run over to help out. Today at the small airport where I hang out the starter acts like the battery is dead. During that time and including today I've replaced it 3 times! Last year I replaced it because the two super long screws that hold the casing together FELL OUT! I noticed that the casing threads on one were stripped. #Pep boys jump starters freeMy most recent trip to Pep Boys was for a battery for a 2001 Chevy Impala - I got a Bosch 96 month battery with a three year free replacement warranty and 770 CCA - this kind of battery would have been a dream in the past. It's been 3 years and 3 months since I bought a rebuilt starter from Pep Boys. Some things have definitly changed over time: Years ago I sold batteries with a two year warranty that came dry - and then you added the electrolyte just before you installed the new battery. I met more than a few mechanical darwin award contenders, some of the regular customers were genuine entertainment. My decade of slinging parts also gave me many great stories - believe me, do it yourselfers in the past were no more skilled than today's do it yourselfers. This simply can't be done with todays cars. I liked it when they would say: "now how did you do that?" I wasn't always right, but often enough I was dead on. I thought it was neat when they would start to tell me what the part was off of ,and I would stop them and point to the box on the counter. As I would see them walking up with a starter, alternator, water pump, or what not, I would walk to the back and pull out my guess of the replacement part. Many long years ago I worked the parts counter - and I could often recognize the specific model of parts that customers would bring to the counter. I can remember when it was a big deal that an auto parts store would have an "Import" parts section! There are two serious parts stores within a 40 minute drive from my house, old time places that have a wonderful depth of parts including engine bearings and piston rings and all the gaskets. #Pep boys jump starters fullAdd to that the tremendous variety of cars that are on the road - its hard for a parts house to really have full coverage. The fact is that fewer do it yourselfers do serious wrenching, cars have changed. The heyday of the local parts store is definitely in the past maybe 20 years ago - at least in my local area. Jegs and Summit beat them on virtually all performance parts pricing. There are no less than five Pep Boys within a half hours drive of my house. They also will get in most parts you request within a day or two if it is in one of the main SoCal warehouses (that all the parts stores use). Well, there must be some variation in what a Pep Boys store will stock, the ones near me all have sevice centers and they stock hard parts as well as accessories.and mini dune buggies etc. Andy, actually there was MORE info - but I shortened it in the interest of brevity ![]()
